Stone geoglyphs in the shape of wheel and circle in Saudi Arabia

Curious satellite images of “geoglyphs” from Saudi Arabia show thousands of ancient geoglyphs. Stretching from Syria to Saudi Arabia, thousands of ancient geoglyphs built from stone, scientists have no explanation for the origin of these traces in the desert. Aerial photographic technology has unlocked insight into mysterious ancient stone structures. The true scale and beauty of these formations is absolutely amazing, and a fresh investigation into the meaning and provenance of these geoglyphs could give us an understanding of the ancient culture and perhaps even share wisdom for the future. Some display a kite-like structure while others have wheel-like designs.

Similar to the Nazca Lines of Peru, they are  in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, with much diversity between structures. The geoglyphs are not noticeable to those on the ground, but can be easily seen by those flying overhead. The local Bedouins refer to them as the “works of old men” but have been unable to provide further insights into their creators. They cover far more area than the Nazca Lines of Peru, and are believed to be much older. Some of the stone structures have been dated to 2,000 years old and perhaps even 8,500 years  and appear to align with the sunrise during the winter solstice. Some experts say that they are aligned with astronomical phenomena. Thousands of these structures extend into Syria and Saudi Arabia. Normally the structures are built on hills and slopes and groups together.

These structures do not seem to have a particular pattern of creation, there are large variations in size and shape when comparing these patterns together.
